OK – just a quick, get it off my chest, rant. Having now done around 1500 miles of this journey I really feel the need to comment on the roads and the users thereof.
Firstly, the roads so far: the road from Cleveland to Chicago was toll all the way – not expensive but noticeable. More significantly, the state of the road, especially as it was a toll road, was appalling. There were lumps, bumps, potholes and miles and miles of roadworks. In general I have found the road quality poor everywhere so far.
The drivers – some of them clearly think they are taking part in a game of ‘Need for Speed’. The seven lane highways are quite a sight but the way some of them like to weave in and out, at speed and on both sides of your vehicle is a little hair raising at times. They also seem an inconsiderate bunch – don’t let anyone in, don’t signal and are generally most discourteous. Surprising to me, at least, is their lack of observance of the speed limit. Also, the huge trucks speed along at 70mph clearing a path as they go. I hate to think what distance it takes for one of these behemoths to come to halt. I have also seen several nasty looking accidents.
As ever, we British understand queueing in a way other nations do not.
Perhaps things will improve – let’s hope so.
