Chateau Madaillan – superbe

Gardens at Madaillan

Date of Visit: August 5th 2013  Somewhat of a late post (as in I lost the photos for a while) from one of those ‘let’s have a look up at the top of this hill’ moments which turned into a wonderful afternoon.

Driving off the beaten track up a pretty narrow road we followed a brown sign saying Chateau de Madaillan.  We eventually arrived at a small car park where there was another motorhome which was clearly well ensconced and plugged in.  We walked up to the Chateau and entered a large room well stocked with wine from the local vineyard (we later bought a few bottled and it was great).  We were greeted by the owner Le Baron who spoke very little English but proceeded to give us a wonderful guided tour of the chateau.  Speaking slowly in French he told us of the long history of the building which he eventually purchased as a ruin many years ago.  His friends thought him mad.  But, he has lovingly restored the building to create a wonderful summer home for him and his family.  You can see a virtual tour here.

This is a beautiful building and a complete surprise.  It also has a rustic golf course which you can play on during the summer.  The other motorhome in the small car park turned out to belong to Le Baron who gave us a ride in his golf cart so we could admire each other’s vehicles!  His was full of wine boxes because he used the vehicle to deliver wine around and about.  The map is below.

Le Baron and his wife were just wonderful.  They even said that we could stay the night there in our motorhome if we wished and I hope one day soon we will be able to.  Definitely worth a visit.
