Taming of the Screw at El Torcal

El Tornillo - The Screw

El Tornillo – The Screw

Date of Stay:June 2013 We stayed overnight in the car park by special arrangement.  This might be possible again but it would be unusual as it was arranged specifically by Andalusia Detours. Stunning rock formations and some amazing walks  make this a popular tourist destination inside a National Park. Photos simply cannot do it justice.  Many of the walks have to be guided because the opportunity to get disoriented and completely lost is almost immediate as you leave the visitors centre.  Wear sensible shoes, look down while walking and stop often to admire the most amazing scenery.  Just to get to the visitors centre is an incredible up hill drive  from the valley floor.
Following a four kilometre guided walk led by the Director of the Park we enjoyed an excellent dinner (the best of the trip I would say) in their restaurant.
El Torcal is also the location of an observatory and after dinner we met with one of the astronomers who had set up high power telescopes for us. Two items I won’t forget viewing were Saturn with its rings and the passing of the International Space Station overhead. Again, the astronomer was organised by Andalusia Detours and the whole evening was inclusive of the meal and the guided walk. This was one of the best evenings of the trip and culminated in hot chocolate and brandy served by the Andalusia Detours team.

The photos are a pathetic effort but I have included a couple below just to give you a sense of the environment.
