MMM iPad App update, the good, the bad and the ugly

I have been subscribing now to MMM on my iPad for the past 6 or 7 months, in fact, since it first became available.  The good: well, it’s cheaper this way and my wife loves it as she no longer sees this ever increasing pile of magazines next to the bed which every now and then I have to move or throw away.  Also, I find I read much more of the magazine itself.  I guess it’s age but the way magazines seem to love to put print on a non white, possibly graphic, background just makes it hard to read.  A back lit iPad is the perfect bedtime reading machine and I take more time and read more of it.  I guess the other added bonus is that I don’t receive all those items stuffed into the magazine and the postman probably loves not delivering it.

The bad: hard to think of anything!

The ugly: It clearly has significant memory issues that cause it to annoyingly crash on a regular basis as you move from one page to another.  I have complained/corresponded with them about this.  It does help if you clear down the iPad memory by doing a reset (hold down the home button and on/off button until the iPad goes off – this clears down anything resident in memory, you don’t lose anything!).  This will mean it lasts longer before a memory leak causes it to crash.  So, when an update was announced this week which said ‘better performance and memory management’ I downloaded the update an the August issue in high hopes of improvement.  Sadly, not to be, it seems just as prone to crashing as before and when it crashes it forgets where you were which means reloading it and finding your page – just like dropping your book when you least meant to and had just got to the interesting part!

Overall, I still prepfer it as the method of delivery and reading.  if it didn’t crash it would be something like a 9 out of 10 for me but as it is, I will give it a six – tries hard, could do (much) better.  Of course, this is all on my generation one iPad – when my sparkly new retina iPad arrives next week I am sure it will all be different (ho ho ho).  The app is available from the iTines App store and there are other links for Google Play and PC and Mac right here.

Admit it Chris………your just getting older lad!

Dropping your iPad and backlighting your magazine…………lol Very good info though – thanks.

Seriously now; any chance of an article on the TV reception range of your satellite dome…….BBC 1 News in Fez?

Bet you could write a glowing review on the Yrokshire Fat Raskel?

OK there might be the odd grey hair (the rest of it is white!), but age may be something to do with it. 🙂

BBC 1 in Fez? I should cocoa! I am planning a short piece on the IT and satellite set up. Will post it shortly.

Many thanks for that info……..I will look forward to your IT article too.

Mick has ‘sweet talked’ me into placing an order for a little Merc. Will you buy another RS?

P.S. I blame the Olympics for miss spelling YORKSHIRE & RASCAL!!! …….nothing to do with my grey mop.

We would definitely have another RS. They have had a tough time but kept it going. I had a long chat to Mick a few weeks back and they have had a tough personal time too.

I also think we should buy British if we can. It’s a shame RS is poor at promoting itself. Even in this month’s MMM there is an article on large A class vehicles and s doesn’t get a mention.

IT post next week with luck.
