Wallington House, Gardens and Shakespeare

Date of Visit 17th June 2012

Wallington National TrustWhat a great day out yet again at a National Trust property (see the earlier review on Calke Abbey).  So, once again the friendly NT staff, this time at Wallington, directed us to a coach parking area where we slotted in at the edge and were able to pop out our slide-outs and make ourselves a comfortable base for the day.

Started with a cup of tea in the cafe, super walk round the walled gardens (cup of tea on the way round), followed by a cup of tea (see a pattern emerging?), walk round the house followed by another cup of tea and then the river walk round the edge of the estate (and yes, another cup of tea).  All day long we had been waiting to see what the weather would do, it kept threatening rain but it never came.  So, at 6pm we committed and bought two tickets for an outdoor evening performance of Shakespeare’s Henry V put on by just five thespians from Illyria.  It was absolutely brilliant and very funny.  They have another event at Wallington in mid August where they will put on Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore – it’s a must see for us if we can manage it.  What would be great is if the staff would just let us stay parked in the car park afterwards so I could down something stronger than a cup of tea in the evening!  Are you listening National Trust? It would be so easy and such a great way to encourage even more people to come to these evening events.

To summarise, very friendly staff, wonderful gardens, house and walks and a cracking day out.  It’s definitely 8 out of 10!
